If they involve people, then yes, they do.
I think without a Community Manager you could waste a lot of time developing features the community has no desire for. Plus, if you didn’t have a Community Manager, there’s a good chance that by the time you get done building your website, the people who are using it will be uninspired.
Also, the engineers at Vimeo are very happy that they don’t have to deal with some of the emails Blake and I handle. If they had to deal with the junk, they wouldn’t be able to focus on actually making the site. If they chose to just ignore everything except crucial emails, the communty would not feel cared for.
